Excerpt from this Gun Guide manual, The Topper name started with the Model 48 in 1943. In 1947, H&R introduced their first Deluxe chrome Model 47. The Topper name has been used by New England Firearms (NEF) and H&R 1871, after the purchase by Marlin in November of 2000. Model 48 Topper was manufactured from 1943-1956 in 12, 16, 20, gauge, and .410 bore with barrel lengths from 26 to 32 inches. Model 058 Topper has a case-hardened frame and rebounding hammer and manufactured from 1974-1976. Guns are marked Model 58. Model 098 Topper Deluxe were manufactured from 1974-1981. In 1977 H&R began offering a nickel frame and black hardwood stocks. Guns are marked Model 98.The transfer bar ignition system was introduced in 1977 and installed on all models through 2008....During 2000, Marlin Firearms Co. purchased the assets of H&R 1871, Inc., and the name was changed to H&R 1871, LLC. Marlin also purchased New England Firearms (NEF), and L.C. Smith brands. In late January of 2008, Remington (Owned by Cerberus Capital) acquired the Marlin Firearms Company. In September 2020, JJE Capital Holdings, LLC was the successful bidder of the H&R, DPMS, Storm Lake, AAC, and Parker brands in the Remington bankruptcy auction. JJE is the parent company of Palmetto State Armory.
